Alison McNair’s love for art, creativity, and design began when she took a darkroom photography class in high school. While working in the dark room, she realized she wanted to do more with her art. She wanted to find a way to apply it as a medium. Alison is a Graphic Communication Design student in DAAP at the University of Cincinnati, where she is learning to create art that impacts lives through visual cues.
This past summer, she had the opportunity to work at IDEO, in Cambridge, through a fellowship with The Berkley College of Music. The goal of the fellowship was to figure out ways to help tackle artist compensation. The first two days she was immersed in panels for 8 hours. The best takeaways from this opportunity were that the best ideas are usually the ones that pop into your head in the first five minutes. She also learned to quickly execute and deliver.
She was first introduced to the startup world here in Cincinnati through a couple of her friends, who are recent grads of UpTech 4. She furthered her work in StartupCincy while working for local startup, Astronomer. While working with Astronomer, she was exposed to Cintrifuse, Union Hall, and plenty of startups. She was able to interact with individuals who worked at large corporations like P&G to entrepreneurs who just had ideas as well as learn more about what it is like to work for a startup.
As for her work at UpTech, Alison loves working with people from different cultures, learning how to juggle priorities, and being able to apply her specific background in design. She notes, that her work as an UpTech Design Intern has been the most independent work she has ever done. “This opportunity is such a great learning experience, it is so important for designers to work independently because that is when you create your best work.”
In her free time, Alison loves cooking, reading, and a good road trip. One of her favorite things is exploring new places and learning about other cultures, even right here in Cincinnati.
We are so happy to have Alison on our team, join us in welcoming her to our UpTech family!
